1951 Oldsmobiles: Overview
For 1951, there was a continuation series, the 88-A, and it offered vehicles similar to the 1950 88 series, a strong seller. Near the end of the model year, 88-A production was dropped altogether, and the car disappeared from later editions of the 1951 catalog. Gone for 1951 was the long-running inline six cylinder engine. Going forward, only a pair of chassis sizes and series would be offered - 88 and 98.
Production for 1951 dropped to 275,160 vehicles, but that was still strong, and 184,185 of these were Series 88 cars.
1951 88 V-8 SERIES:
The 88 Series cars were, for all intents and purposes, a "continuation" series from 1950. It is believed that they were constructed from body materials left over from the previous year's run.
They were, of course, less expensive.
Standard features included bumper guards, cigarette lighter, dome light, rubber floor mats, stainless steel moldings, and lined luggage compartment. DeLuxe cars had extras including foam seat cushions, rear ash receiver, and stainless steel gravel shields. Upholstery choices were nylon or nylon cord. Standard tire size was 7.60 x 15 inches. Just two body styles were available - 2-door and 4-door sedans.
1951 Super 88 V-8 SERIES:
The new middle series was styled completely differently from the Eighty-Eight series and had more in common with the 98s. With its five body styles, the Super 88 offered the Olds buyer more selections than the other Olds series. A DeLuxe package of equipment was offered on this series as well, and it included items from both the standard and DeLuxe 88 packages, plus low-pressure tires, special interior chrome door trim, exposed chromed roof bows, and dual rear quarter courtesy lights. Upholstery choices were colored leathers, nylon cloth or nylon cord.
1951 98 V-8 SERIES:
The 98 was the top of the line Oldsmoble for 1951. Three body styles were available, with the four-door sedan and convertible featuring only DeLuxe equipment while the Holiday coupe could be had in either DeLuxe or Standard trim. Ninety-Eight standard equipment included all items from the 88 series plus illuminated ash tray, foam rubber seat cushions, and extra chrome moldings. DeLuxe equipment included special rear door ornament, rear center seat armrests, DeLuxe electric clock, DeLuxe steering wheel and horn ring, and special chrome trim. Upholstery choices were nylon cord, nylon cloth and leather.
