It finally happened. Old Faithful broke down.
Not only did I have to walk to the beach for the first time in 5 years, but I was sure I’d never find another car with all that sporty style.
Then I walk by this beautiful, and I mean beautiful, new Cutlass 442. It had a slant-back grille, a big old competition stripe, and all the extras* - super stock wheels, raised white-letter tires, bucket seats, 5-speed transmission. I stuck
my head inside to get a better look at the gauges when the guy that owns it comes by. I thought, “uh-oh - here comes a knuckle sandwich.” But instead he asks me if I wanted to take it around the block.
It was unreal. That FE2 Rallye suspension gave me that good old cruisin’ feelin’. And the guy told me it was even available with a 403 - that’s the new lighter weight
Rocket V-8. On top of everything, it’s an Oldsmobile.
Well, I thought they stopped making sporty street machines like that when they stopped making beach movies. But that little ride made me a believer again. I said to myself, “Man they built one for me.”
And who knows 442 might even improve my standing with Sharon.
But that’s a whole other story.
