(“For Rescuing from [Mortal] Danger”). There is a raised logo “MMD” of the Moscow Mint on the reverse near the edge at approx. 7 o’clock position. There is a raised numeral sign and underline for the serial number; the provision for the number however has been left blank.
The medal is in excellent, near mint condition, shows only storage age. There is attractive patina to the medallion, no blemishes or noticeable scratches. The ribbon is old but well-preserved and clean.
This medal was established in 1994 by a President Yeltsin’s decree. Initially, the law provided that it would be made in German silver (nickel copper alloy), but after some of the medals were produced at the mint, the specifications changes and all the medals that followed were made in silver. The initial batch remained unissued, and some of these eventually made it to the collector’s market. Sometimes they are offered for sale by unscrupulous or ignorant dealers with a fake serial number added, but as far as we know, none of the initial batch in “nickel silver” actually had a number or were officially bestowed. Nevertheless, since they are official mint production, they are of an interest to the medal collector. By now, this unissued version has become quite scarce and sought after!
