I was the most massive smashing pumpkins fan in high school. trolled amoeba and rasputin for all the imports and b-sides, memorized eric agnew’s FAQ. saw them at the cow palace in 1997 and briefly considered pissing my pants instead of abandoning my third row position in the pit.
summer, 1998. my friend’s mom was the principal at a middle school and for some reason I definitely cannot recall the smashing pumpkins were going to be there. it seems strange now but at the time the only thing that mattered to me was that it was the day after my flight left to israel for a six week youth group trip. my mother was not swayed by my assertions that my flight absolutely needed to be changed, but she did write my name in pencil on both the box and the booklet (thanks mom), I guess just in case there was a mountain of memorabilia to sign and mine got mixed up in there.
six weeks later I was back in california, with a good tan, speaking about six words of hebrew and having made out with a south african boy. waiting for me was the signed box set and a photo of my friend’s little brother with his arm around billy corgan.
nine years later, I went down to santa cruz to catch them on the zeitgeist/reunion tour and I walked past billy corgan on front street on my way to get a burrito. I ended up doubling back and telling him something bland about his music meaning a lot to me in my life, so I guess it all worked out in the end
